VALENTINES DAY - JUST AN EXCUSE TO BE ROMANTIC WITH YOUR BOYFRIEND OR GIRLFRIEND AND MAKE SINGLE PEOPLE FEEL MORE LONELY

Valentines Day is coming to an end, and I'm by myself in the Old Main lab at UCC typing a blog about my thoughts of this day. Yes, I could have got a date rather than spend my time working on schoolwork tonight, but I went on a date last night. Do I care that I went out last night instead of tonight, which is dedicated to be the most romantic night of the year? Nope. Because, unlike some people, I don't need a night designated for couples to take a girl out and romanticize with her. I mean, what kind of society are we living in that we need a day like Valentines Day to be romantic. Shouldn't couples be that way with each other anyways?

Now I'm not calling myself a romantic. In fact, I'm quite insensitive at times when it comes to dealing with other people's emotions. But I just don't understand why people get so depressed on Valentines Day. This day is really quite evil if you think about it because it makes other days of the year seem irrelevant. I mean, I could have had the time of my life last night but people would ignore that because I'm not doing anything tonight. People who have been single for a long time, like me, may go periods acting just fine until Valentines Day comes along and then they feel lonely. Then for those who go out and have a great time with their boyfriend or girlfriend, they will talk about it for days following the date because it happened on Valentines Day. Because this date is labelled on the calendar, it makes it that much more special. If anything, you'd expect Valentines Day to just lose its effect over time. After all, girls know the sort of things to expect Valentines Day. Wouldn't a fancy dinner, some flowers, chocolates and champagne be a much more pleasant surprise on a regular day when romance wouldn’t be expected? After all, aren't girls into spontaneous and exciting guys, not predicable ones? How predicable is a date on Valentines Day? I guess it's the material possessions and fancy dinners that make this day so special for them though. It's a day when a material girl can find out how much her boyfriend really likes her based on how much he spends by the end of the night.

Now I know what people will think when they read this. Initially they'll be thinking things like, oh he must just making himself feel better by putting down Valentines Day and yada yada yada, but you know what? I'm not bitter and not typing this for that reason. I honestly just think that Valentines Day is something more fun in elementary school when you get to cut out hearts, give out cards, find a Valentine and discover your secret admirer. Remember all the fun games in elementary school?
